A former top Nashville session musician, Split Lip Publisher J. Scott Bugher bases Split Lip Press on today's music industry, where artists understand major record deals are things of the past, which has triggered the rise of indie labels releasing the best music out there. Bugher feels like publishing is heading this way, though it's a little behind. Writers, for some reason, sit on their manuscripts for up to a decade while paying up to thousands in reading fees hoping to land a deal with a big wig publisher. The question, which is: Why do writers hold onto a manuscript for so long while there are options like partnering with a determined and passionate small press?
J. Scott is a visionary, one who takes a vision and puts all he's got into realizing it. Split Lip's vision is to offer writers a publishing house that is desirable, not tolerable. Though Split Lip can do only so much, they believe small press publishing is the new world order for the literary scene.
