19 Rounds with...Becky Robison

July 7, 2017

Amy Rossi

If you have seen the magic of our Twitter feed -- and if you're landing here, there's a good chance you have -- than you know the power of Becky Robison, our Marketing and Social Media Coordinator. She spreads the word of Split Lip far and wide, in addition to helping keep the engine of our mag running, and she's the latest to tackle our 19 Rounds:

1. Early bird or night owl?

Thoroughly nocturnal.

2. What was your worst haircut?

I think my worst haircut was simply when it wasn't cut. I used to wear it long, and it would tangle easily. I wasn't very good at taking care of it. Now I have a pixie cut, which makes me look fashionable and requires little effort.

3. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

This is a tough call. Perhaps the title track off David Bowie's Station to Station? It's basically three songs in one, and it has great lyrics. It's not the side effects of the cocaine/I'm thinking that it must be love. So good.

4. Can you roll your tongue?

I can, but not particularly well.

5. Mayonnaise: yes or no?

I am from the Midwest. Mayonnaise is life.

6. What is your least favorite word to come across when reading a book or story?

Suddenly

7. Which movie was better than the book?

The Silence of the Lambs is a better movie than it is a book--but only slightly.

8. What was your first concert?

I went to see Neil Diamond with my dad when I was 8 years old. It was awesome.

9. It's Friday night. You're home alone. What did you order for dinner and what's on the TV?

Pizza (boring, I know) and Law & Order. Original, SVU, or Criminal Intent--no preference. As long as it features the thunk-thunk of justice, I'm in.

10. How do you take your coffee?

I don't take coffee. I take tea.

11. What expression do you use that most people have never heard?

I call the remote control a "clicker." I've only met a few other people who do, and there doesn't seem to be a geographic connection. It's a mystery.

12. What movie have you seen the most times?

Probably When Harry Met Sally. It's a wonderful film to watch at different points in your life. I get something new out of it every time.

13. What is the best thing you cook or bake?

While I'm not known for my skills in the kitchen, I do make a mean salad. Not a specific salad. I'm just good at determining various ingredients to toss together.

14. Finish this sentence: More people should be reading:

Jandy Nelson's I'll Give You the Sun. I read it last month, and I'm obsessed. I can't get over the prose. It made me want to scream or puke or set myself on fire--in a good way.

15. Favorite time-waster?

Advice columns

16. What's the hardest thing about writing?

For me it's character development. I'm always more interested in what my characters are currently doing than in the characters themselves, which leads to some real problems when I revise.

17. What's the best thing about writing?

That feeling when something you wrote is so good that you can't believe you wrote it.

18. What is your favorite sentence from a short story or poem?

Mine's two sentences. From the end of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado":

"For the love of God, Montresor!"

"Yes," I said, "for the love of God!"

19. What question were you hoping to be asked?

What is your favorite pen? (The Pilot G2, obviously.)
