Natanya Ann Pulley is the author of this month's featured short story, "Cannibal," and she isn't just an amazing writer -- she also created this awesome collage. We're so thrilled to bring you her work. Here, she lets us peek behind the curtain and learn a little bit more about how "Cannibal" came to be:
"It's hard to write about resignation and inevitability when writing of violence and particularly violence towards women or marginalized people. It's hard to write around the tropes (even th...

We recently welcomed Leta Keane to the Split Lip editorial FAM and we could not be happier! Leta's our web editor, and she's an absolutely incredible addition. Get to know her better with 19 Rounds:
1. Early bird or night owl?
Early bird. I am for SURE a diurnal creature. I wake up with the sunrise and struggle to stay up more than a few hours past sunset.
2. What was your worst haircut?
I once tried to get a masculine pompadour cut, but wound up with something that could more appropriately be deemed Agg...

Mark Galarrita is this month's featured flash writer. Also, he clearly knows his way around a french bread bake.
We're in love with Mark's story, "My Sad Werewolf." Here's just one thing about his writing process for this piece:
"This story came from a prompt by writer’s Kira Frank and Emily Montgomery who run the Writers in The School’s--a program that teaches free creative writing lessons to high school students in the Tuscaloosa area. Kira asked the group to write down any monster on a sheet of pap...

How much do we love Denise Weber? So much. As our art director, she's the force behind our amazing logo (just for starters), and as assistant poetry editor, she takes great care with your submissions. Also she has great taste in tee shirts. So it's time to bring back 19 Rounds and get to know Denise!
1. Early bird or night owl?
Night owl -ish ... staying up late got exponentially harder after I hit 25.
2. What was your worst haircut?
My mom tried to give me bangs in 7th or 8th grade. She and my sister lo...

Before writing this “Why We Chose It” piece about W. Todd Kaneko’s beautiful poem “Elegy for Mr. Spock,” I called my brother and asked him how he felt watching The Wrath of Khan for the first time and seeing Dr. Spock die. First, he corrected me. It’s not “Dr. Spock.” Dr. Spock is the baby doctor. Then, he said that he was surprised and very sad and didn’t believe they’d kill off such an important character. And, in fact, they didn’t. The explosion in The Wrath of Khan created a planet that had regen...

Our August issue is just about ready into your life, and you know what that means: it's time to check in with our contributors and hear about what they've been listening to, watching, and playing.
Mark Galarrita
I’ve been listening to "You Can’t Hurry Love" by The Supremes and other Motown classics because of my partner, I miss her.
Natanya Ann Pulley
New York Dolls, self-titled album (lately, again, always, predictably so). And the repeating trailers or montage for every Netflix show as I scroll through...

We're thrilled to announced the Split Lip Poetry Contest Vol. 1, judged by Paige Lewis. When asked what they're looking for in a poem, Paige shared:
"I’m interested in the poem you lost sleep over. The one that gave you goosebumps the first time you read it out loud. The one that refused to be controlled, that traveled an entirely different path than what you’d intended. The one you won’t show your mom. The poem that’s been swimming around in your head for weeks, the one you’ve been too scared to writ...

1. I’ve been aspiring to write at this desk since I was five years old. Sometimes I think about getting a new desk, a grown-up desk, and then I look at desks online and realize that most grown-up desks have no drawers in which to put my markers and the various items that I have acquired in the twenty-five years I have owned this desk. I realize too that looking at desks is just another form of procrastination and a different desk is unlikely to help me write more or better.
2. Underneath the desk I...

We're honored to feature artwork from Swedish artist Klara Bartilsson this month. "Coven," our cover image, is from her series This Witch. We caught up with Klara to learn more about the series, the medium of silk scarves, and the motivation behind her powerful pieces.
This witch won't burn
1. We are all in love with This Witch. Can you talk about how the idea came about? Why witches? Why now?
Thank you so much! My personal work often deals with feminist ideas and struggles, and it came to a point w...
